A larger waistline circumference can be linked to an increased risk of serious health conditions, including high cholesterol and even fatty liver disease. One way to determine whether you have visceral fat—the type of belly fat that surrounds your internal organs—is by measuring the circumference of your waist.

After you find the circumference, you may be ready to make some healthy changes. We spoke with Jacob Siwicki, founder and head coach of Siwicki Fitness, NCSF and AFAA certified, former top 1% globally ranked Equinox group fitness instructor (2019), Dartmouth economics graduate and former Dartmouth football player, fitness expert on FOX 5 DC, who suggests four morning exercises that will can help strengthen your midsection faster than crunches after 60.

“I like this group [of exercises] because it works the front and sides of the core. It also teaches the core to keep the spine steady while the arms and legs move. You can train the entire area without bending your back over and over again,” Siwicki says. “A strong core helps with balance and posture. It also supports almost every movement you make. Getting out of bed. Picking something up. Carrying groceries. Turning around. Your core is involved in all of it.”
